The OUT FRONT Denvers' Gay community Forum July 14, 1993 | HATE CRIMES DOUBLE IN DENVER | The Denver Police Department recorded an increase in hate crimes toward lesbians and gays during the first quarter of 1993. Nine hate-related crimes had been registered between January and March of this year. That number is up from the previous year where four crimes were reported by police as being hate-related. While police are not linking the rise to the passage of Amendment 2, some lesbians and gays are. Jody Andrade, coordinator of the Anti-Violence Project at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Colorado said that, according to her records, 78 anti-gay crimes were reported for the first quarter of this year compared to 17 for last year. Kat Morgan, Executive Director of the GLCCC, said that she believed that the rise in hate crimes has a direct connection to the passage of Amendment 2. | NEW EVANGELICAL INFLUENCE CONSIDERS COLORADO SPRINGS | Another religious right group with ties throughout the country is considering the conservative home of Colorado for Family Values as its home. The Coalition of Revival, a California-based organization which has ties with many religious right elements, is considering a move to Colorado Springs next spring. The group is one of the more controversial evangelical groups to surface recently. They call for the demise of public schools, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve System by the year 2000. Jay Grimstead, president of the Coalition, has been optimistic about rebuilding his organization in Colorado, where he says he can be with like-minded fellow reformers. His plans include establishing a school which will train approximately 200 Christian political activists a year. Such names as Tim Lahaye of the Traditional Values Coalition and R.J. Rushdoony, a believer in Reconstructionism, are among those on the Coalition for the Coalition's steering committee. Rushdoony has called for actions such as an end to democracy and the death penalty for homosexuals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Corrections, new info, and requests for info: amend2-info@cs.colorado.edu Administrative comments : amend2-mod@cs.colorado.edu General Discussion : amend2-discuss@cs.colorado.edu Boulder/Denver area local meetings/events : amend2-local@cs.colorado.edu ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe to a list, send mail to Majordomo@cs.colorado.edu, with subscribe in the BODY of the message.
