Date: Thu, 11 Aug 94 14:38 PDT From: Rick Valdivia The UCLA Alumni Association recently protested discrimination by ROTC against gay, lesbian and bisexual people. The Association has gotten several letters condeming the decision. They have not received any letter in support of the decision. Following is the article that appeared in the Association's newsletter: ---------------------------------------- On May 25, the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors passed a resolution to protest discrimination by ROTC against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. "The association continues to be a vigorous opponent of discriminatory pratices and an advocate of diversity and inclusivity at UCLA, especially when it impacts the students--our future alumni," says John Kobara, executive director of the association. The resolution upholds the alumni association's bylaws which prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the policy of the University of California, which has a similar ban on discrimination. The association's nondiscrimination policy covers all associated groups, including the UCLA Army ROTC Alumni and the Navy ROTC Yeomen. -------------------------------------------------- They need to get some letters of support ASAP to counteract the letters of protest. The letters should be addressed to: Editor, Alumn News at ALUMNI@URJWC.UCLA.EDU It's especially especially helpful to write if you're a UCLA Alumni and/or Alumni Association member (if so, state your year of graduation and, if applicable, that you're a member). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- For general unmoderated discussion, mail to "la-motss@flash.usc.edu".
