Date: Fri, 15 Jul 1994 09:58:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Will Roscoe The following course is being offered this fall semester through Native American Studies at UC/Berkeley. Please pass the word to any interested Berkeley students you may know of. To my knowledge, this is the first time a course like this, which will include a focus on the berdache or two-spirit tradition, has been offered by a Native American Studies department. Thanks! NATIVE AMERICAN SEXUALITY AND GENDER NAS 190 FALL 1994 This course introduces the study of native North American gender roles and sexuality through the use of ethnographies, autobiographies, literature, film and the arts. Historical and anthropological perspectives will be used to look at the relationship between gender roles, social organization, and culture. Alternative gender roles and identities (such as, the "berdache" or two-spirit) will also be explored, along with contemporary issues of sexual and gender difference, and the impact of HIV in Indian communities. The course will address such questions as: What is the native "philosophy of gender"? How are gender and sexuality constructed in different tribes, and what meanings do they have? What are the links between gender, religion, and economic roles? What has been the impact of Euro-American contact on gender and sexuality? The seminar format will combine lectures and discussion. Evaluation will be based on a series of short papers and a final project.
