As a Jesuit priest for forty years, Father McNeill was expelled from his religious order when, as a matter of conscience, he refused an order by Roman Catholic Cardina Ratzinger to give up all ministry to gay and lesbian persons. McNeill is the author of "The Church and The Homosexual" published in 1976 and "Taking A Chance on God" Liberating Theology for Gays and Lesbians, Their Lovers, Friends and Families" published in 1988. He also served in combat with the U.S. Army during World War II and spent six months in Germany as a prisoner of war. Celebrating over 25 years of ministry, Metropolitan Community Church of Los Angeles is the founding congregation of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC). Established in 1968, MCCLA is one of over 350 UFMCC congregations world wide which maintain, support and encourage a Christian outreach to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community with an emphasis on Christian social action.
