The series will be facilitated by IGLE Board members Amy Ryan and Simon LeVay. The lectures include: Sept. 28: "Homosexuality in Greece and Rome" Amy Richlin, Prof. of Classics & Women's Studies at USC October 5: "The Social Benefit of Homosexuality: A Case Study from Java" Walter Williams Prof. of Anthropology at USC October 12: "Thriving at the Crossroads: Asian-Pacific Lesbians and Gay Men in America" Terry Gock, Asian Pacific Family Center October 19: "The Flowering of Lesbian Literature in the 1990's" Loralee McPike, Prof. of English at Cal State San Bernardino October 26: Title to be announced November 2: "West Hollywood--10 Years Out" Moira Kenney, Urban Studies at UCLA and IGLE Board member November 9: "Feminist Witchcraft and the Dianic Tradition" Ruth Barrett, Elder Priestess, Circle of Aradia November 16: "Animal Homosexuality" Simon LeVay (IGLE). WEDNESDAYS, 7.30-9.30 P.M., STARTS SEPTEMBER 28 FEE: $40 FOR THE SERIES, OR $8 PER LECTURE ************************************************************* * * * * SPECIAL EVENTS AND WORKSOPS FOR OCTOBER * * * * * GAY AND DEAF--CROSS-CULTURAL ASPECTS * In this workshop, Hank Stack of Portland, Oregon, will focus on some of the major issues of interaction between deaf and gay people and the hearing culture, the hearing gay subculture and the mainstream deaf culture. This will be a bilingual presentation with sign-language/oral interpreters: both deaf and hearing people are invited. It is drawn from Stack's lifelong experiences as an activist deaf person in a hearing world, in addition to his research involving videotaped and informal interviews with many individuals around the country, representing a cross-section of the Deaf/Gay population. Topics will include residential school life, coming out, being gay in the deaf straight world, and interacting with hearing gays. The workshop will be of special interest to professionals and others who interact with deaf gays as care providers, friends and lovers. A graduate of Gallaudet University, Hank Stack is himself deaf, as were his parents and all except one of his siblings. Currently a sign-language newscaster for the NBC affiliate in Portland, and a part-time instructor at Portland Community College, he is an officer of the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf, a national organization of deaf lesbians and gays. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 10 A.M. - 5 P.M. (With one-hour lunch break) FEE: $45 ******************************************************************* * LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS * This workshop will provide participants with opportunities to further understand their experiences in relating to other women in supportive and life-enhancing ways. Topics will include learning from our goodbyes, daring new beginings, and developing staying-power--learning more about the ingredients of long-lasting and satisfying relationships. The workshop format will include time for individual reflection and voluntary sharing of experiences and insights and practising relationship skills such as active and non-defensive listening and "fighting fairly". Bronwyn Anthony Ph.D., licensed psychologist in private practise in the South Bay and Santa Monica, teaches The Psychology of the Lesbian Experience for IGLE (not offered this semester). SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1-5 p.m. FEE: $35 ***************************************************************** * GAYS AND LESBIANS IN THE HOLOCAUST * This lecture will examine the place of gays and lesbians in the Nazi genocide. Specific topics to be covered include: the prewar gay and lesbian community in Germany, gays within the Nazi party, and the persecution and internment of homosexuals. Specific attention will be paid to the difference between Nazi persecution of gays and Nazi persecution of other groups, particularly Jews. David Bianco has a Master's degree from Stanford University in Modern Jewish History, with a focus on the Holocaust. He is interested in the role of the Holocaust in the mind and culture of American Jews, lesbians and gay men. He has taught in San Jose and San Francisco. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 7P.M.
