Date: Mon, 11 Dec 1995 17:09:40 -0800 From: Doug.Case@sdsu.edu (Doug Case) I'm passing along this information at the request of Laurie McBride, executive director of LIFE, California's Gay/Lesbian and AIDS Lobby. She informs me that LIFE has received a matching grant that will match up to $3,000 any money sent to LIFE to defray the costs of sending youth to the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgendered Youth Lobby Day. Make your check payable to LIFE and mail it to 926 J Street, Suite 522, Sacramento, CA 95814. They also are trying to identify G/L/B/T youth (24 or younger) to participate in the lobby day. Your help would be apprecicated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------- QUEER YOUTH LOBBY DAY IN CALIFORNIA'S STATE CAPITOL Wednesday, January 3rd, 1996 A Day to empower the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered & Questioning (LGBTQ) Youth of California... California State Capitol Sacramento, California Sponsored by LIFE: California's Lesbian/Gay and AIDS Lobby Background: In 1995: The California State Assembly Committee on Education failed to pass AB 1001,an important bill which would have prohibited sexual orientation discrimination in all of California's public schools. Despite the horrific statistics of queer youth suicide, despite eloquent testimony from teens about the harassment and discrimination they face, the bill failed. Assemblymembers voting against the bill insisted that there isn't "enough" of a problem to justify passing a law. ( A conclusion they reached despite the vitriolic testimony of some opponents who actually insisted that "discrimination is the price of sin".) The California State Senate stalled SB 101, a bill to provide age-appropriate HIV prevention education to 5th and 6th grade public school students. Can we afford NOT to educate youth about HIV and AIDS ??? The facts are: by 1994, 14,000 boys and men between the ages of 13 and 25 were diagnosed with AIDS. All LGBTQ and concerned straight youth as well as adults who care about the future of our youth are invited to participate in this event. This is YOUR chance to inform your elected officials that this type of denial and delay is not acceptable. Check-in begins at 8:30am at the State Capitol Rally at the Capitol Steps at 11:30am Join: CHASTITY BONO ASSEMBLYMEMBER SHEILA KUEHL and LGBTQ YOUTH from around the state! E-Mail: lmCAgayLOB@aol.com for more info. NOTE: We're organizing buses from the Bay Area, and have a block of airline tickets from Los Angeles. We're fundraising to help students defray travel costs.
