Subject: Updated Web Page for GLS Date: Mon, 05 Feb 96 08:35:20 -0800 From: "Cathy, The Hyker" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gay & Lesbian Sierrans/Loma Prieta Chapter An Activity Section of the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who are we? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are a friendly relaxed group of lesbians and gay men who enjoy outdoor adventures and camaraderie on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the SF South Bay (San Jose Area). As we grow, we hope to develop new programs (e.g. trail maintenance, monthly educational programs on conservation-related issues) and subcommittees (e.g. membership, publicity, and conservation) to encourage your participation in, and appreciation of, the outdoors, and to educate ourselves on current environmental issues and how we can be involved. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Sierra Club Connection: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are part of the Sierra Club, which has around 630,000 members nationwide, and is considered to be one of the oldest and most well-respected grass roots environmental organizations in the world. We are an official activity section of the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter, which has 22,000 members and encompasses San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Benito counties in California. Our Gay and Lesbian Sierrans (GLS) Section began as an offshoot of the San Francisco Bay Chapter GLS section in the fall of 1991. We hold a unique place within Sierra Club history, since we are currently one of only five such Sierra Club GLS sections in the country. The other chapters are located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and New York City. We hope to see more sections form across the country. Please feel free to write to us (see below) about how you can start the wheels turning to form a section in your area of the country. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What do we offer? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- * We offer a variety of activities, such as day hikes, overnight and weekend camping trips, bike rides, our ever popular, once-a-month game nights, and special holiday events. * We host general membership meetings featuring guest speakers and/or special presentations. * Our Governing Committee meets the first Thursday of each month in Palo Alto, California. Come meet us, find out what we're up to, and contribute your ideas! * We participate in Gay and Lesbian gay pride festivals in both San Jose and San Francisco. * We offer opportunities for developing your leadership and activities skills by offering a wide range of volunteer positions such as hike leader, Governing Committee member or committee chair. * Through our outdoor adventures and activities we offer you the opportunity of meeting other lesbians and gay men who share similar interests. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try US! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You and your friends are welcome to join us at any of our activities, even if you are not yet a member of our GLS Section or the Sierra Club. We car pool from central locations, such as the Billy DeFrank Center in San Jose, for many of our outdoor activities. Generally our outdoor adventures are free, except for the cost of campsite or shared car pooling. Most of our events are for both women and men, although we do occasionally have special women only and men only events. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do you find us? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our address is GLS/Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter 3921 East Bayshore Road Palo Alto, California 94303 Our Voice mail number is 408-450-0402 Feel free to write to us at the above address for more information on our section or call our voice mail number to leave us a message.
