Date: Wed, 15 May 1996 12:12:44 -0800 From: Doug.Case@sdsu.edu (Doug Case) Subject: Gay & Lesbian Families of America Announces Billboard Campaign for GOP Convention For Immediate Release Contact: Michael Lamb, Lamb & Associates, (619) 435-6299 GAY & LESBIAN FAMILIES OF AMERICA ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR UNPRECEDENTED MEDIA BLITZ San Diego, CA - The San Diego Chapter of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD/San Diego) recently announced its sponsorship of Gay & Lesbian Families of America (GLFOA), a local organization dedicated to presenting a positive image of Gays and Lesbians during the weeks coinciding with the upcoming GOP Convention. The organization, launched by Brad Diskin, Gene Burkard and Don Belcher, was also recently endorsed by the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission. Gay & Lesbian Families of America has rented 12 billboards and 17 bus shelter ads strategically placed throughout Downtown, Hillcrest and Harbor areas of San Diego. The ads will be located on all the city's major arteries. They will be visible to San Diego residents and visitors. GLFOA will also place several display advertisements in key San Diego publications, designed to attract both local and national media attention. The ambitious media blitz is scheduled to begin July 15 and continue through August 15. The estimated cost of the entire project is $35,000. "We're trying to reach minds as well as hearts," said Brad Diskin, a committee member of Gay & Lesbian Families of America. "Gay and Lesbian families represent all walks of life. We want to convey that we're a large, diverse, responsible group of people who deserve recognition, not hatred and discrimination." "The campaign will focus on three themes," Diskin said, "family, work place and basic human rights." The objective is deliver a positive message to mainstream America from the gay community and to direct national attention to the broad spectrum of diversity that exists among Gay and Lesbian families.
