Date: Wed, 26 Oct 94 23:53:12 -0700 From: haynes@netcom.com I received a letter from Calif Assemblymember Rickard Katz (the author of AB2810 - - the Domestic Partnership bill). Here's a copy: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- October 18, 1994 Ms. Ellen Clary Dear Ms. Clary I'm sure you know that Governor Wilson vetoed the Domestic Partners Registry bill. Choosing to ignore the pleas of organizations representing every aspect of society and the calls and letters from thousands of individuals throughout the state, Governor Wilson caved in to the political demands of the right wing. In his veto statement, Governor Wilson refused to acknowledge the very real problems that families of unmarried partners experience under the law and instead suggested that these couples "exercise appropriate foresight." He also demonstrated his contempt for families without a marriage certificate, blaming them for a host of society's problems including "welfare dependency and increasing teen-age crime and violence." By vetoing AB 2810 Governor Wilson proved not only his fear of the religious right wing, but also his lack of respect and compassion for the hundred of thousands of California families who don't have the benefits of amarriage. This fight is far from over. Until the State of California addresses the needs of _all_ of its families, I will not stop my efforts. In fact, on the first day of the next legislative session, I will reintroduce the Domestic Partners Registry Bill. Sincerely, RICHARD KATZ 39th Assembly District
