Date: Tue, 18 Oct 1994 07:57:46 -0700 From: dlt@huey.csun.edu (David Thompson) The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles Founded 1979 -- Jon Bailey, Artistic Director -- HOLIDAY -- "Don We Now" _The_ way to begin the holidays--GMCLA's annual tribute to the warmth and joy of this special time of year. This year, GMCLA will present two very different traditions. One is holiday music from the Southwest, including a 16th Century carol in Spanish and "Carols and Lullabies" by Conrad Susa. The other tradition consists of favorite Olde English carols. The concert is highlighted by "A Christmas Dinner," a cantata for two gay men, evangelist, and chorus, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, words by Craig Sturgis, and arrangement by Larry Moore. And, the program would just not be complete without our traditional sing-a-long for chorus and audience. December 7th at 8pm at the Irvine Barklay Theater December 17th at 4pm and 8pm at the Alex Theater, Glendale -- SPRING -- "Touching the Heart" A celebration of life in the time of AIDS. Through beautiful and inspiring music, pause with us to reflect on our community's monumental losses...while still remaining aware of our roots and our pride. Like the change of season from winter to spring, we will be uplifted by renewed hope and life made manifest in this stirring musical program. The concert will feature songs of hope, love, struggle, and remembrance. Of particular note, GMCLA will introduce our audiences to Kris Anthony's beautiful cantata, "When We No Longer Touch," which was featured in a recent highly acclaimed PBS documentary. March 15th at 8pm at the Irvine Barklay Theater March 18th at 4pm and 8pm at the Alex Theater, Glendale -- SUMMER -- "Swellegant Elegance" A fresh, witty and romantic look at the songs of one of America's most faaabulous composers--Cole Porter--done as a musical review--yes, singing, dancing, and comedy all by GMCLA. Cole Porter is known for such standards as "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Anything Goes," "Night and Day," and "You're the Top." But what was he really thinking when he wrote these songs: "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Find Me a Primitive Man"? We have an idea and we'll be sure to let you in on it! And, we promise to be musically faithful to some of Porter's songs, even if we offer distinctly gay interpretations of others. July 8th at 8pm at the Irvine Barklay Theater July 15th at 4pm and 8pm at the Alex Theater, Glendale Season tickets for all 3 concerts are available now for $67.50 (a savings of 10% off the regular price of $75 if purchased individually).
