Michael Petrelis, a former head of the Washington, DC chapter of ACT-UP and a former member of Queer naion, was quoted in the November-December issue of the Magazine _Mother Jones_ as saying, "If someone took out Jesse Helms or William Dannemeyer of California, I would be the first to stand up and applaud." Elsewhere in the article by Michael Willrich, Petrelis speaks of the 1989 AIDS conference in San Francisco: "We should have shut down the subway and burned down city hall. I think rioting is a valid tactic and should be tried," the _Philadelphia Gay News_ reported. GLA's first nationwide action was press conferences at state capitals to push for lesbian and gay rights on Valentine's Day. Steven Reichert, described by a GLA news release as "interim National Network Coordinator," said gays and lesbians "can't rely on a small handful of Washington lobbyists to gain freedom. Our challenge will be to empower people to speak for themselves, shout at their elected officials, and have a voice in their own liberation." - Bob Summersgill | Xq28 -- Thanks Mom!
