Subject: [iyf] GenderPAC Announces Dana Rivers at Creating Change Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 19:51:05 -0500 From: owner-iyf-online@gpac.org **GENDERPAC NEWS RELEASE** DANA RIVERS AT CREATING CHANGE RECEPTION THIS THURSDAY (NOV 11)! Dana Rivers, the award-winning Sacramento High School teacher who was fired from her job this fall after right-wing pressure on her local school board, will be the featured guest at a reception at Creating Change this Thursday, November 11, in Oakland, CA. The Conference is a yearly event held by the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and draws thousands of activists from across the US. Said Ms. Rivers, "I'm looking forward to meeting people and brainstorming what we can do to help push the movement for gender rights to the top of the national agenda so what happened to me doesn't happen to the next person." Rivers drew national attention from 'Good Morning America,' the New York Times, Time Magazine, and People after she transitioned on the job and was subsequently targeted by the Pacific Justice Institute, a conservative group that helped engineer her suspension by the local school board. The community rallied behind her, though, with students, parents, and concerned citizens, and even a local radio station holding rallies on her behalf. Her case is currently in litigation. GenderPAC's Gina Reiss, who announced the event added, "Gender-based oppression and violence will be a major focus at this year's Creating Change. We think no one better exemplifies the struggle for gender civil rights than Dana Rivers. We're proud that she's agreed to do this event with us." ### Subscriptions.
