Bodlund has for a period of five years studied 19 transsexuals and found that about 70% of the post-operation transsexuals experienced a possitive self-esteem in the time following their operations. One reason for that is, according to Bodlund's claims, the tough examination which preceeds the approval of every sexchange. It takes between five and ten years for a person to complete a change of his/hers biological sex. In Sweden a total number of 250 persons, 50% of each sex, have had undertaken sex-changing surgery. 50 persons per year apply for surgery, but only 10-15 are granted this opportunity after initial consultations with medical staff.
