Boy Scouts of America, L. Stephen Galambos suggests that `activists earn their good name by their own endeavor and sacrifices.' Equal rights activism is in and of itself both an endeavor and a sacrifice. Activists dedicate their lives to ending discrimination so that a minority group may enjoy the rights and rewards that the majority takes for granted. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people have especially suffered discrimination from institutions which they joined at an early age, institutions which they planned to support and work for the rest of their lives, institutions which frequently pledged to support them in return. We salute all those who work to make sure that others do not have to endure the oppression that they themselves have already experienced. Sincerely, Barbara Lamond Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators The above letter was sent on IWG letterhead listing 19 congregations and religious organizations and 65 clergy from 16 religious traditions.
