Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 21:43:23 -0400 From: Interfaith Working Group Subject: IWG Dallas Dr. Laura letter August 1, 2000 Dallas Morning News Box 655237 Dallas, TX 75265 Dear Editors: Dr. Laura has made disparaging remarks about the religious beliefs of those who believe that same-gender sexual activity and attractions are morally and ethically equivalent to mixed-gender sexual activity and attractions; she has argued that sexual minorities do not have rights; she has misrepresented current medical thinking; and she has generally portrayed any attempt to apply the Constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people as a threat and a conspiracy against society. Despite his sarcastic definitions of tolerance and diversity in his July 27 letter, Paul Lonsdorf is essentially correct: a tolerant and diverse society has no business financially supporting Dr. Laura’s intolerance or letting it pass without comment. Activists must make creative use of free speech to achieve anywhere near the level of exposure that Dr. Laura receives through her misinformation-ridden column, radio show, and upcoming television show. Sincerely, Barbara Lamond Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators The above letter was sent on IWG letterhead listing 22 congregations and religious organizations and 65 clergy from 16 religious traditions.
