Dear Editors:

Frank Hartwig (letter, December 26) states that 100
million people in America believe that "the whole
Bible is inspired by God." He then implies that all
of those 100 million people identify themselves as
"fundamentalists," that they all "know that the Bible
clearly denounces homosexual practice as contrary to
God's will and God's loving plan for humankind," and
states that none of them "fear overpopulation." Such
statements would be overly broad even if limited to
those who believe that the whole Bible is the literal
word of God (the standard definition of
fundamentalist). Homosexuality and overpopulation
are just two of the many issues that Christians
debate on a regular basis; what the Bible actually
says about these and other issues, or how to
interpret the Bible to shed more light on a variety
of issues, is by no means something that all
Christians agree upon.

Sincerely,

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 16 congregations and
organizations and 60 clergy from 15 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
