Dear Editors:

Thank you for your February 5 editorial regarding
religious belief and discrimi-nation. The government
should not be in the business of subsidizing
religion, because the entanglement of government and
religion threatens our religious freedom. We agree
that the government must set an example in fighting
discrimination, since it is the one institution that
belongs to and represents all of the people. But it
is religious people who need to set the example for
religious institutions, supporting institutions that
welcome and support the rights of gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgendered people and their families,
and working from within to change the policies of
those that don't.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 17 congregations and
organizations and 61 clergy from 15 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
