Dear Editors:

We were disturbed by the February 28 quotes from the
Rev. Robert Jeffress. Rev. Jeffress and his
congregation are perfectly free not to check the books
`Daddy Has A Roommate' and `Heather Has Two Mommies'
out of the library. But this is a religiously free
and religiously diverse country, in which one set of
religious beliefs is not supposed to be the basis of
public policy. Contrary to the views of Rev.
Jeffress, Jewish and Christian teaching is not
consistent or unanimous on the subject of sexual
orientation (and many other subjects). If libraries
stopped stocking every book that some group objected
to on religious grounds, there would be almost no
books left that a library could stock.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 17 congregations and
organizations and 61 clergy from 15 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
