Dear Editors:

In his commentary about the Wisconsin Supreme Court's
decision about opting out of student fees Alex McRae
makes may broad and inaccurate statements about what
all Christians feel about a number of topics. We wish
to respond to three in particular:

There are Christians (and other people of faith) who
oppose school prayer because, among other things, it
incites tensions between people with different belief
systems and often leads to violence against religious
minorities. Contrary to his commentary, many people of
faith also support campus centers for sexual
minorities, which serve students of all faiths (many of
them Christian). And finally, since our laws are based
on the Constitution, many Christians and other people
of faith believe that that is the document that should
be on the walls of our courtrooms, not the Ten
Commandments.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 15 congregations and
organizations and 59 clergy from 16 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
