Dear Editors:

Jim Jones is completely incorrect in saying, "No
mainstream American denomination has clearly supported
full participation of homosexuals in their churches,
through approval of ordination of gays or endorsing of
same-sex unions." The United Church of Christ
encourages ordaining bodies not to discriminate on the
basis of sexual orientation, and has a national office
for gay and lesbian affairs. The Unitarian
Universalist Association encourages sexual minority
ordination and endorses same-sex unions. The
Episcopalian Church as a denomination has not
officially endorsed the ordination of sexual minorities
but many bishops (as Jim Jones pointed out in his
article about Lambeth) have chosen to perform such
ordinations, and a church court determined that there
is no reason to stop them.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 16 congregations and
organizations and 59 clergy from 16 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
