Dear Editors:

Adam Caress (letter, July 19) states that the
media does not understand Christianity. We would tend
to agree that there is a widespread and unfortunate
lack of understanding of religious issues in the
country as a whole; this is reflected in the media,
which in turn reinforces those misunderstandings in the
general public. One of the most unfortunate
misunderstandings, which we also find in Mr. Caress's
letter, is the notion that religious (and especially
Christian) opinions on homosexuality range from mild
disapproval to outright condemnation. There is a
rapidly growing movement among people of many faiths
which holds that heterosexuality and homosexuality are
morally equivalent, and an even larger number who,
regardless of their personal moral opinions, believe
that theology has no place in determining equality
under the law.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom

The above letter went out on IWG letterhead listing 16 congregations and
organizations and 59 clergy from 16 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.
