The following went out on IWG letterhead listing 12 congregations and
organizations and 55 clergy from 15 religious traditions. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.

Dear Editors:

Ron Borges' March 29 analysis of Reggie White's
unfortunate comments was sensible and profound, until
he reached the part about homosexuality and the Bible.
Borges wrote, "As anyone who is more than an occasional
reader of the Good Book knows, it is tough to argue
with White on that. The God of this book considers
homosexuality a sin." There are plenty of Biblical
scholars, preachers, and laity who are very familiar
with the Bible and no know such thing. Has Mr. Borges
been neglecting to read the newspaper? Did he somehow
miss the stories about the uproar over same-sex union
ceremonies in the United Methodist church; the
contentious debate over the ordination of sexual
minorities in the Presbyterian Church (USA); the
expulsions of University Park Baptist in Austin by the
Texas Baptist convention and Germantown Mennonite in
Philadelphia by the Franconia Conference; or the recent
Freedom to Marry conference in Boston? Mr. Borges and
Rev. White need to come to grips with the fact that
religious support for gay rights is growing rapidly and
is quickly becoming a major force in American society.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom
