March 26, 1997 Linda Munich WPVI Channel 6 4100 City Line Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19131 Dear Ms. Munich: Over the last two years the coverage of gay-related issues on Channel 6 has improved dramatically and we have been encouraged by the station's willingness to demonstrate the diversity of opinion on social issues, especially among people of faith. Thus, we are puzzled by your refusal to air a commercial which discusses only the number of states that do not ban job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Polls have consistently shown that the public is as uninformed about the legal status of sexual minorities as they are about the diversity of religious opinion on the subject. We would be very interested in knowing what WPVI's standard is for determining whether a commercial is "controversial."
