You wrote, "Indeed, anxiety over the notion that the state should have no special relationship with the institution of heterosexual marriage extends far beyond those who dislike homosexuality and homosexuals." We do not understand why the genders of the people involved makes a marriage more or less deserving of a special status. It is also apparent that those who object to same-gender marriage believe that heterosexuality is superior, whether they claim to dislike non-heterosexuals or not.
