The following went out on IWG letterhead listing 9 congregations and religious
organizations and 38 clergy from 13 faiths and denominations. If you are in
the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious
organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths
are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in
other areas.

Dear Editors:

We were generally impressed by Bruce Bawer's piece on
the anticipated reorganization of American
Protestantism. The media usually glosses over or fails
to explain the basic theological understandings which
inform religious social activism. However we are not
convinced that the remaining differences of opinion
among those on both sides of the "Church of Love" and
"Church of Law" debate are so slight that they will be
as easily overcome as Mr. Bawer implies, and in
dividing all Protestants into two camps over this
admittedly huge issue, he ignores the possibility that
other debates will become paramount as we are faced
with new social challenges, and he runs the risk of
continuing the religious stereotyping to which we have
all unfortunately grown accustomed

Sincerely,
