Dear Editors:

Patrick Buchanan seems to think that a disagreement
over what God thinks is a disagreement over the
existence of God. There certainly are people who do not
believe in a god. There are also those who believe
that God is less judgmental than Mr. Buchanan, and
those who believe that God judges actions motivated by
love or compassion more positively than those motivated
by hate or a quest for power.

As coordinators of an organization composed of fifty-
one religious organizations and clergy from thirteen
faiths and denominations, we celebrate the
constitutional rights that make it possible for people
of so many different religious backgrounds to live
together peacefully. We categorically reject Mr.
Buchanan's notion that religious diversity will
ultimately lead to civil war.

Sincerely,
Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom
