December 20, 1996 Wall Street Journal 200 Liberty St. New York, NY 10281 Dear Editors: We are very happy that state and federal constitutions provide for an independent judiciary who will protect the rights of religious minorities from the whims of the majority. It's about time that one court finally had the nerve to put an end to the links between civil and religious marriage. Judge Chang is not legislating from the bench, he's ruling on the truth two centuries too late and under much too limited a jurisdiction; but better a little too late than nothing at all. At least it's something to build on.
