Subject: IWG Time Magazine Letter Date: Tue, 28 May 1996 23:10:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Purdom The following went out on IWG letterhead listing 2 congregations, 4 religious organizations and 25 clergy from 10 faiths and denominations. If you are in the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in other areas. Rockefeller Center New York, NY 10020 Dear Editors: The religious section of your June 3 "For Better or Worse?" article was so incorrect that we would consider it dangerous. You made no mention of the many religious individuals and institutions in this country who support same-sex marriage because they do not believe that same-sex relationships are inherently sinful. Homosexual behavior is not consistently disapproved of in the Jewish and Christian traditions, nor is Leviticus 20:13 universally accepted as a condemnation of homosexuality. The congregations, religious organizations and clergy listed on our letterhead are but a tiny fragment of that portion of the American religious community which vehemently disagrees with your generalizations. By parroting the beliefs of the theocrats as though they were fact, you erode the public's recognition of the religious diversity which makes this nation great. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
