Subject: Inquirer on Gideons in Waynesboro Date: Sun, 24 Mar 1996 15:28:05 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Purdom The Sunday, March 24 Philadelphia Inquirer has a story on a church-state debate in Waynesboro PA, and mentions Salt Lake City as one possible solution for the School Board. Carl H. Silverman, an athiest, has challenged the policy of letting the Gideons hand out Bibles in the elementary schools, and has demanded equal time for an athiest tract. In private he is getting support, but the only public support has come from an Episcopalian priest. The pastor of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren said that he could see exposing college students to athiest ideas, but that elementary school students weren't ready for that kind of thinking. The reporter mentioned the Salt Lake City School Board's decision to ban all clubs rather than allow gay clubs as a possible alternative - ban the Gideons rather than let an athiest tract into the schools. It was nice that they mentioned the Priest's support. As TJ Walker recently said "Bibles and Public Schools go together like forks and plugged in toasters."
