October 25, 1996 The Philadelphia Inquirer PO Box 8263 Phila., PA 19101 Dear Editors: Thank you for your front page coverage of the Elizabethtown school board story. We were especially fascinated by Barbara Estep's comments; she said that Christian families are the only example that should be taught in school, and that to teach otherwise is to imply that any lifestyle is OK, but she does not want to be considered a bigot. In a few short sentences she implied that members of religions other than Christianity are not worth mentioning in school, that Christians do not live in families other than those which fit Concerned Women for America's definition of the norm, and that people who fall outside Estep's definition of Christianity have no moral limits. The job of schools is to prepare children for adulthood, not to enforce ignorance or to protect children from knowledge. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
