September 19, 1996 Philadelphia Daily News PO Box 7788 Phila., PA 19101 Dear Editors: Your report that Robert Bork is calling for Congress to be able to overrule the Supreme Court by a simple majority vote is further evidence that the goal of the Religious Right is to throw out constitutional protection for minority opinion. Think about how it might work: a conservative fundamentalist Christian majority is elected to Congress and promptly rules that only fundamentalist Christians can hold federal jobs, or the overwhelmingly white majority overturns Brown v. Board of Education. There would be no defense from the Supreme Court . Sorry. Constitutional protections apply to everybody, and they must be preserved. The justices on the Supreme Court are not pandering to voters, or what they think voters want, as are the reelection-minded members of Congress; they are concerned with interpreting and being faithful to the Constitution of the United States of America. You may not like who the Supreme Court is defending today, but tomorrow it could be you. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
