Subject: IWG CDA Daily News Letters Date: Tue, 20 Feb 1996 21:53:55 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Purdom The following went out on IWG letterhead listing 2 congregations, 4 religious organizations and 21 clergy from 9 denominations. If you are in the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in other areas. Visit the web page at http://www.libertynet.org/~iwg/ A similar letter was sent directly to Mr. Bykofsky, with an invitation to visit our web page and see for himself. February 19,1996 Editors The Philadelphia Daily News PO Box 7788 Phila., PA 19101 Dear Editors: We were extremely startled to read two columns in today's Daily News supporting the Communications Decency Act. Both Mike Royko and Stuart Bykofsky claimed that the purpose of the act was to limit children's access to pornography. As anyone would know who read the news stories, the final bill places restrictions not only on pornography, but also on any discussion of abortion, pro or con, and anything considered indecent and offensive according to the standards of the person receiving the material. The ACLU filed a suit on behalf of family planning and AIDS-information organizations, NOT on behalf of pornographers. Some people have told us they find the Interfaith Working Group web pages offensive and indecent because we highlight documents provided by religious organizations, congregations and clergy who support gay rights, reproductive freedom, and the separation of church and state. Until this law is overturned, the fact that such written works are constitutionally protected will not prevent easily-offended theocracy- minded individuals from bringing harassing charges against us or the documents' authors. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
