Date: Sat, 04 Nov 1995 16:24:25 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Purdom Subject: IWG Linda Burton response The following went out on IWG letterhead (2 congregations, 4 religious organizations and 14 clergy - let us know if you want to be added): November 2, 1995 The Philadelphia Inquirer PO Box 8263 Phila., PA 19101 Dear Editors: Linda Burton is right, tolerance is destroying America. We are too tolerant of husbands beating their wives, and parents beating their children. We are too tolerant of a system in which there is a correlation between race and economic status, and between gender and salary. We are too tolerant of the random taunts and violence inflicted on sexual minorities, and we are way too tolerant of attempts to spread fear, hatred, and misinformation, especially in the name of innocuous mainstream groups like Mothers at Home. In short, tolerance of the kind of behavior exhibited by Linda Burton is tearing us apart. In this age of information a belief system that cannot withstand exposure to a little knowledge is doomed to failure. Someday Ms. Burton, or her children, will come to appreciate, and even celebrate, the diversity and contributions of all the wonderful, interesting people in this country who are different from her, some of whom, once a year, dress up in leather and march in parades. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
