On day six of the incarceration of Rev. Dr. Mel White in the Virginia Beach City jail, Dr. White, former ghostwriter for leaders of the radical right, continues his vowed fasting. As they have every day since Dr. White was arrested for trespassing at the Christian Broad- casting Network compound, a group fo 12 delegates attempted to arrange a meeting with Pat Robertson and delivered flowers on Dr. White's behalf. Today, the group was taunted by a small band of protesters with anti-gay placards. Leading the protesters was Donald Spitz, nationally known for his endorsement of violence, including murder, against abortion providers and support staff. As Dr. White's supporters quietly left the CBN grounds, Spitz unsuccessfully attempted to antogonize the group by stating, "What are you going to do, start shooting Christians next?" Because gays and lesbians are being hurt, physically and emotionally, by a religion of hate, Dr. White and Bearing Witness, a coalition of religions leaders and community organizations is asking Pat Robertson, founder and CEO of CBN, to do two things: acknowledge that his broadcasts of anti-gay rhetoric results in violence against the gay community and denounce those acts of violence. The delegation and their supporters have vowed to return at noon daily to the CBN compound. Expressions of support may be sent to: James Melville White, P.O. Box 6098, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. (Note: Dr. White was arrested while trying to peacefully deliver a message to Pat Robertson last week. His court date is scheduled for late March.)
