Lauderdale, FL 33302 (954) 563-3626 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***************************************************************** SOUTHERN BAPTIST DENY THE AMERICAN DREAM TO GAYS June 17, 1997 - Dallas, Texas. At a massive rally of Southern Christian fundamentalists -patriotically pictured waving their Bibles in the shadow and protection of our national colors- a band of religious nationalists sadly proclaimed that "as God- Fearing Baptists" they must deny equality of access and opportunity to non-heterosexuals. While freely enjoying the hospitality and fruits of their national convention site, Baptists overwhelmingly voted to deny any such similar opportunity to non-heterosexuals when and wherever corporate America would permit such Constitutional privilege and right. Mof Warren, president of the Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida, was quite saddened by this demonstration of intolerance and subliminal hate. "All people of faith must accept the fact that the two greatest commandments are that of the love of God and love of Neighbor. According to Biblical scholars Christ never condemned the non- heterosexual as the Southern Baptists now do." Warren further noted that " President Lincoln said it all when he suggested that 'those who would deny freedom to others deserves it not for themselves.'" As in Nazi Germany, the dangers of intolerance- when revived under the shadow of the Baptist proclamation of opportunistic denial- is not only a camouflaged exercise in 'Freedom of Religion' but a specific rejection of the American Dream of 'Freedom from Religious Persecution.'
