THE FOSTER NOMINATION: PRO-ABORTS SAY IT'S A LITMUS TEST WASHINGTON DC -- April 25, 1995 The Family Research Council issued the following: From Day 1, The Family Research Council has been at the forefront of Dr. Foster's nomination -- breaking news issues in his background such as the Tuskegee syphilis study. Next week, on May 2-4, the nation will watch as the Senate Labor and Human Resource Committee will hear testimony on the many controversial issues that have arisen since his nomination. Family Research Council President Gary Bauer has submitted testimony to Sen. Kassebaum's committee and is a leading spokesman on the Foster nomination. While pro-abortion groups say that this nomination represents a litmus test for abortion, FRC knows that there are a number of issues that are of deep concern regarding Dr. Foster's record. His background reveals that he has been on the cutting edge -- and nearly always on its wrong side -- of the most divisive medical ethics issues of our time. Overall, FRC's opposition to Dr. Foster's nomination is centered on the fact that he has been unable to provide a consistent and accurate account of where he has stood and what he has done regarding these controversial issues ... The question of character is why Dr. Foster is not the best candidate for Surgeon General. In the next few days, watch for FRC Talking Points on the following: the Tuskegee Syphilis study, Dr. Foster and Abortion, Involuntary Sterilization, the I Have a Future program, and more.
