ON JOYCELYN ELDERS' DEPARTURE: REARRANGING DECK CHAIRS


WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 1994 --- "The election three weeks ago is still claiming 
Democratic victims," said Family Research Council President Gary L. Bauer on 
Friday.  "It is not a coincidence that Joycelyn Elders' departure from the 
Clinton Administration comes just before a conservative GOP majority prepares 
to take the lead on family issues."

"The Clinton Administration is mistaken if they believe that changing the 
window dressing will make their radically, anti-family proposals any more 
acceptable to the American people.  Parents oppose condom distribution 
programs for their children, legalized drugs for their teens, and euthanasia 
policies for their elderly parents.

"Family Research Council has called for the resignation of Joycelyn Elders on 
several occasions because of the policies she advocates.  But FRC will not be 
satisfied with a different spokesperson for the liberal left -- only with a 
new, pro-family direction.  We will be watching to see what kind of family 
policies the next surgeon general brings to the table."
