Lesbianism/homosexuality-a human survival trait? I'm currently reading "The Underside of History" by Elise Boulding. In the chapter "Dominance, Diomorphism, and Sex Roles" she says: "Meanwhile, another concept--that of social ambidexterity--gets short shrift. A certain amount of philosophical deference is paid to the idea of a society in which women and men both have their analytic and intuitive side equally developed--what Margaret Mead (1967) called the androgynous society--but people are generally unenthusiastic about this. Someone always calls out 'vive la difference!.' " Androgny in the biblical writings is one area of my studies. In pursuing it I have toyed with the idea that this route is desireable for the human species because a decrease in sexual differentation will possibly lead to a decrease in sexual reproduction and an increase in facing other world problems from a more shared vewpoint. In my opinion humans need to decrease reproduction and join together to work on the pressing problems of overuse of resources, unequal use of resources, and the accompanying aggression, (and of course the damage this does to all non human forms of life) for the world and its variety to survive ecologically. In the same vein I consider lesbianism/homosexuality a possible survival trait (or genetic option) within the human species--one that should be valued--not eliminated or persecuted by law, science, or psychology.
