Date: Sat, 8 Mar 1997 16:55:06 -0600 (CST) From: David Peavy In order to provide a resource and not violate any copyright laws, I have put together a partial bibliography of news articles that deal with BSA's discrimination against gays. BSA's Discrimination Against Gay Youth and Adults A Partially Abstracted Bibliography V1.0 --------------------------------------------------------- Books --------------------------------------------------------- Jeal, Tim. The Boy-Man: The Life of Lord Robert Baden-Powell. New York: William Morrow, 1990. Note: While several recent biographers of the founder of Scouting have hinted at Baden-Powell as having homosexual tendencies (see: Michael Rosenthal. The Character Factory: Baden-Powell and the origins of the Boy Scout Movement. New York: Random House, 1984 and Piers Brendon. Eminent Edwardians, Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1980.), Teal is the only one that has asserted that Baden-Powell actually had a physical homosexual relationship. National Center for Lesbian Rights. Boy Scout Bigotry: Fighting Back. San Francisco, CA: National Center for Lesbian Rights, 1992. Boyle, Patrick. Scout's Honor: Sexual abuse in America's most trusted institution. Rocklin, CA: Prima Publishing, 1994. Note: While not dealing directly with BSA's ban on gay youth/adults, it does present a clear and concise picture of BSA's convoluted approach to this issue. While BSA now says that a sexual abuser is more than likely to be a straight man, it will expel an openly gay man, who is less likely to be an abuser, than expel a straight man who has confessed of having had an homosexual experience. The author profiles 8 former Scout leaders who sexually abused Scouts. -------------------------------------------------------- Periodical Articles (Recounting the challenges to BSA' Discrimination policy) --------------------------------------------------------- 1983 --------------------------------------------------------- Seiler, Michael. Abstract: In a letter to the editor, ACLU of Illinois' Gay & Lesbian Rights Project Director Roger Leishman says an August 1, 1996 Chicago Tribune editorial criticizing the ACLU for challenging the discriminatory policies of public and private agencies that operate Boy Scout troops totally misses the point and trivializes the ACLU's efforts. "Gay issue embroils Boy Scouts after a chapter's policy memo." New York Times, (December 19, 1996): A, 24. Abstract: A small shift in an internal memorandum at a Boy Scout chapter in San Francisco has reignited the often volatile issue of homosexuality in the Scouts. It was reported the week of December 8, 1996 that the San Francisco Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts had quietly approved a policy that would allow gay men and boys to participate in Scout activities as long as members did not openly advocate homosexuality. =========================================================== Note: Given the probability of BSA changing its discrimination policy in the near future, this is a work-in-progress.
