We do this by undertaking a wide-range of educational efforts that acknowledge the fact that gay men and boys are now and always have been an important component of the Scouting programs. Volunteer gay Eagle Scouts and gay Boy Scouts are being sought to participate in a Washington, DC park beautification project. The activities will be conducted at several parks in the greater Washington DC area on Friday, April 23, as an advance thank you to the residents and city government for their support of the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts who reside or will be in the Washington DC area for the March and who wish to participate are encouraged to contact Forgotten Scouts immediately at (415) 626-8299. Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts from the greater DC area who would like to be involved as local coordinators are also encouraged to contact us immediately. Forgotten Scouts' goal is to conduct an opening ceremony to the "Good Turn" project at one site during an early morning ceremony. Teams of 10-15 gay Scouts and their supporters will then be dispatched to the selected sites. All sites will either be accessible by public transportation or transportation will be arranged. Local coordinators will be identified for each site. Forgotten Scouts is in the process of contacting the nearly 1,000 gay Scouts who have written us over the last year to be a part of this activity. Since Forgotten Scouts is run without funding, we are also asking Forgotten Scout members who do not hear from us within December or January to call and be sure that we have you on out list. We are currently updating our lists. LOCAL AND NATIONAL SPONSORSHIP Local and national organizations and individual financial sponsors are badly needed. The general needs include playground equipment, paint, gardening supplies and tools, regular tools, etc. Other specific items will be sought Other specific items will be sought once the particular locations have been selected. Non-deductible cash donations can also be made to Forgotten Scouts for this project. Community groups and local scouting programs are free to adopt a site for the day's activities. Forgotten Scouts will work with these organizations to arrange needed supplies. Forgotten Scouts is actively seeking support from local Washington DC residents and will soon be providing a listing of groups and individuals who are committed to assisting with the project. Anyone wishing to participate should call Forgotten Scouts to provide us with contact telephone numbers and addresses. Information and registration packages will be available soon. BUDGET NEEDS Estimated List/Cost of Items for Parks. These estimates are difficult to determine without knowing exactly what is expected at each park and how many parks are to be renovated. A more precise estimate will be determined as we proceed. Donations being sought include the following: Playground Equipment Paint Maintenance Tools Gardening Supplies Trash bags Gloves Other costs and supplies required include: Project Coordination Food Postage Printing Telephone/Faxes Transportation Permits Forgotten Scouts is currently seeking assistance to identify which parks will be renovated.
