The following memo was issued from Ben H. Love to all BSA
Councils on February 21, 1992. It is in response to an
article ("Boy Scouts Again Say No to Gays") that appeared
in the Wednesday, February 19 issue of the San Francisco
Chronicle.

SUBJECT: BOY SCOUT TASK FORCE UPDATE

From: Ben H. Love [National Scout Executive]

To: Scout Executives

As expected, the Bay Area United Way Board of Directors
approved their Boy Scout Task Force's recommendations (as
discussed in the attached San Francisco Chronicle article).

Again, we reiterate our position that the group's
recommendation is totally unacceptable to the BSA. We have
made this point in a news conference in San Francisco on
Tuesday, on a national satellite interview on Thursday,
"CBS Evening News," also on Thursday, and on today's "Good
Morning America." We have received very heavy media
coverage and our message is loud-and-clear. And the
response we've been receiving has been overwhelmingly
positive!

Our next step is for the six Bay Area local Boy Scout
councils to respond to the United Way recommendation. That
response will be, again, that the United Way "advocated a
position that is unacceptable and untenable for the Boy
Scouts of America."

In two related issues:

* The San Jose Troop 260 issue has been resolved, with
the troop's leadership reaffirming their commitment to the
Boy Scout's values and policies.

* Despite media coverage to the contrary, we have
received no information on the Cub Scout den in Berkley
which allegedly sent a letter regarding the BSA position
on homosexuality.
