------------------------------------------ July 13, 1993 Queer People of Color (Q*POC) is an empowerment organization intent on raising community awareness and promoting social change. Traditionally, queer people of color have had to fight for equality surrounding issues of race, sexual orientation, gender, and class. It is our voice which encompasses the intersections of these social constructions. This is what Q*POC brings to the forefront of activism. As such an empowerment group, Queer People of Color would like to keep you informed about our activities. Here is a short list of announcements: THE BAN, LESBIAN AND GAY RIGHTS, AND THE MILITARY As queer people of color, we felt it necessary to voice our opposition to the military in relation to our various communities. As we clearly outline in our position paper, þ þThe Ban,' Lesbian and Gay Rights, and the Military,þ service in the military by traditionally marginalized peoples has never brought about political, social, or economic justice in the United States or abroad. We hope that you will take the time to study our position, and we hope that it sparks a re-examination of the current rhetoric surrounding þthe ban.þ SPEAKERS BUREAU ORGANIZED Q*POC has recently organized a Speakers Bureau intended to educate and empower people. Our members have spoken eloquently on topics such as the politics of the Clinton administration; multi-ethnic organizing; interracial relationships; the criminal justice system and state power; þgays in the military;þ and the intersections between race, gender, sexuality, and class. Q*POC has participated in panel discussions, radio talk shows, and interviews for various newspapers. If your organization is interested in utilizing Queer People of Color's Speakers Bureau, please contact us. WOMEN ON A MISSION Q*POC will host Women On A Mission on Saturday evening, October 9, 1993, in Claremont. Be staggered by their colorful, thoughtful explanation of timely social and political issues including sexuality, injustice, cancer, self-identity, AIDS, relationships, and our future.þ More information regarding their benefit performance will be forthcoming!
