Project 21 of GLAAD/SFBA battles for inclusion of lesbian, gay and bisexual information in California's history and health texts. Now we commence the struggle for recognition of our sensibilities and contributions in literature and language arts in public school curricula and texts. This will be an even tougher battle, since the English-Language Arts Strategic Plan as currently formulated doesnot include us. The current;Chair of the Curriculum Commission, Dr. Yvonne Johnson of the Hayward Unified School District, has been very supportive of our issues but, unfortunately, she rotates off as chair at the end of November. Your written input to the Commission is needed. Write to the Chair, California Curriculum Commission; also write to Gloria Blanchette, Commission member and chair of the commssion's English-Language Arts Subject Matter Committee; also write to Dr. Shirley Hazlett, Administrator, Language Arts and Foreign Languages Office. All can be reached at the Calfornia Department of Education, POB 944272, Sacramento CA 94244-2720. Tell them lesbian, gay and bisexual authors can only be understood by discussin g the influence of sexual orientation on their sensibility. Send them copies of proper textual interpretatoins of Whitman, etc. Send copies of your letters and any attachments to GLAAD/SFBA, Project 21, 514 Castro St. #B San Francisco CA 94114.
