Subject: The Heartland Project Begins

Dear Net Friends,
THE HEARTLAND PROJECT, INC., is a new nonprofit organization
to provide on-site training, assistance and advice to lesbians, gay
men, and bisexual and transgendered persons seeking to organize (or
renew) and maintain community groups, projects, and political
action--especially in suburban, small-town and rural areas of the
U.S.--and to help them link up with national movement
organizations.
A five-member board of directors, now in formation, will run
the organization. Bernard Mayes, founding chairman of the board of
National Public Radio (among many other achievements), has agreed
to serve on the board. In addition, an advisory board of
interested and supportive persons is being formed.
An application for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status has been filed
with the Internal Revenue Service.
The project will begin field work on January 1, 1995. Because
any foundation grant funding will not be forthcoming for several
months, the project is very much in need of individual contribu-
tions to get it up and running.
An eight-page prospectus for the Heartland Project is now
available. If you are interested in (a) making use of the
project's services in your community, (b) serving on the board of
directors or the advisory board, or (c) making a financial
contribution, please write me at the snail-mail address below or by
Internet at mwh8h@virginia.edu, or call me at (804) 293-8736, and
I'll send you a prospectus promptly.
     Thanks very much.

Peace,
Mark
