CLGSG is the Coalition of Lesbian/Gay Student Groups. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Dallas, Texas. It exists to promote LGB organizations and issues on post-secondary campuses in the central South/Southwest.It was created by students who came together for the 1989 Texas March on Austin (St. Cap.) for Lesbian & Gay rights. Although it was started by Texas students, they were joined in Fall '89 by folks from Oklahoma. It is not a national org. (though there is a need for a nat'l queer student org.). The target organizing area for the Coalition is TX, OK, LA, NM & AK. Thus far, college org.s from all states save Ark. have participated. (We're still trying to get through to the group at U.Ark. Fayetteville without luck. If anyone has a contact there, or they're on the net, pls. let us know.) The target area was chosen simply to reflect geographic realities - this is a spread-out part of a BIG country. This represents feasible traveling distances by car which is the primary method of "cheap" transit here. We would love to have groups from places adjacent to our target area join us any time they are able or any one else who can. (Note: we strive to keep the costs of our programs low - our conf. on 9/21 was $10/student with comm. housing availble, contrast this with NGLTF $125-180, or LIMITED INCOME $75-115! Hah! - only rich fags and no students need apply). We also will share with others what we know subject only to the limitations of being an entirely volunteer staffed org. As an org. we are committed to fighting heterosexism, racism, and sexism as linked phenomena. Our board is made up of students, recently graduated community activists and more established comm. activists. Representatives of the breadth of the LGB communities is our goal and at this time, our 7 person Bd. has (almost) 50% gender parity and 50% people of color. We hope to improve that. The Bd. has, of legal necessity, fin. respon. & oversight but the broadest policy decisions are made by students in a Congress of reps. from participating student org.s. This is probably more info. than you all wanted (and you thought there was no life outside the coasts or up North!) Also note additional contact: Chris Luther, 74020,3241@compuserve.com. Chris is down in Austin. Our voice mail is 214.761.3802. ps: donations are cheerfully accepted. (new) We have an annual conf. (all students) in the early fall. We just had our 2nd one. We just had our first leadership workshop (officers) this summer down in the Texas Hill Country. We have 25-30 campuses/org.s in our target area to whom we mail. That number includes all the LGB student/youth org.s that are known in the region. Most of those org.s participate (save Arkansas) tho' not all in any given event. We also have quarterly Congress mtg. where the those working with the Coalition meet to set policy for the org. Hopefully this answers most of your questions. Internat'l L/G Youth Org. DC contact: Bruce Douglas 202-546-5683. The Coalition is not a member of ILGYO but is a member of ILGA, the Internat'l L/G Association. Coalition of Lesbian/Gay Student Groups, Dallas, Texas.
