Date: Wed, 18 Jan 1995 06:37:08 -0800 From: jessea@uclink2.berkeley.edu (Jessea Greenman) Subject: Urgent Action Alert re Virginia Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1995 Virginians for Justice ACTION ALERT SEX EDUCATION UNDER ATTACK The Virginia House of Delegates is considering an amendment to House Bill 797 that would allow local public school systems to remove Family Life Education from their curriculum. The amendment was made by Del. Robert Marshall (R-Manassas). VJ opposes all attempts to limit or remove FLE requirements because many young Virginians have no other opportunity to learn about the transmission of sexual diseases or to learn about human sexuality. The Marshall amendment also includes a provision that all students would need parental permission to attend FLE classes rather than the current "opt-out" procedure. Please phone 1-800-889-0229 to voice your opposition to the Marshall amendment to HB797. An operator will record a yea or nay, but usually no further comments. The House is expected to vote on HB797 as soon as Tueday afternoon, Jan. 17, but the battle will likely continue during the coming week. You must know your Delegate's name or your district number to use the 1-800 number. If you do not know either, check your voter registration card or call your local voter registrar. FOR NON-VIRGINIANS, the best tactic might be to phone Delegate Marshall's office at 804-786-7297 or to make supportive calls to a likely ally, Speaker of the House, Del. Thomas Moss (D-Norfolk) 804-786-6880. For more information call VJ at 804-643-4816 or e-mail va4justice@aol.com PLEASE FORWARD AND CROSS-POST AT WILL.
