The culture that produced the Kama Sutra is now rediscovering its tolerant views of sexuality. The contingent is organized by Trikone, the local group of gay and lesbian South Asians that is today the world's oldest such group. Through its work over the last eight years, it has catalyzed a gay/lesbian revolution that has quietly but steadily swept across South Asia. In the last four years, India has seen the birth of five gay/lesbian publications and the founding of over 10 gay/lesbian support groups. Last year, Trikone became the first such group to march in the India Day Parade held in the city of Fremont. This year, Trikone will also run a booth at the Festival of India in Union City August 12-14. "It is important to be visible in the South Asian community because so many of us are in the closet, isolated," says Trikone President Devesh. "Growing up, we could have benefited from knowing about a group like Trikone. We are also marching to let the larger community know that we exist, that we are as South Asian as everyone else."
