Trikone (tri as in trim, kone as in cone, Sanskrit for triangle) is a non-profit group for lesbian and gay South Asians. (South Asia includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet) Founded in 1986 in the San Francisco Bay Area, Trikone is the oldest group of its kind in the world. Trikone's goal is to bring women and men of South Asian heritage together in a friendly, supportive, and non-judgmental environment, and to promote awareness, visibility and acceptance of alternative sexuality in society. Trikone proudly affirms both its South Asian identity as well as its sexuality. Trikone opposes sexism and any other kind of discrimination. Trikone organizes and/or participates in a number of local social, community, and educational events. We have marched in the annual San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Freedom Day Parade every year since 1986. Since 1993, we have also participated in the India Day parade in the bay area, and in 1994 had a booth there too. Other activities in the past two years include organizing the well-attended cultural program, 'Tamasha', organizing two readings for the book, 'Lotus of Another Color' by Rakesh Ratti, organizing a talk on HIV/AIDS in India by Ashok Row Kavi of 'Bombay Dost', walking in the Santa Clara County AIDS walk, speaking on panels at universities such as Stanford, Berkeley, and UCLA, etc. As Trikone celebrates its 10th year in 1995, we have planned 'Pride Utsav '95', a conference and celebration for queer South Asians across North America and the world. This will take place June 15-18, 1995 in San Francisco. The activities scheduled include a keynote address by Urvashi Vaid, plenaries, workshops and readings, a South Asian dinner banquet with a cultural show, and awards presentation, receptions/parties, participation in the San Francisco dyke march and the Freedom Day parade. Trikone publishes a magazine four times a year. Trikone magazine contains articles, interviews, features, poetry, personal stories, art, essays, classifieds, resource listings and more. Our current subscription base spans over 20 countries worldwide and we have a circulation of 1200 copies. The magazine is also available in selected bookstores in major cities across North America.
