Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 10:40:28 -0500 From: TomSwann@AOL.COM Subject: Stonewall LA Democrats Endorsement News PRESS RELEASE (March 15, 1996) CONTACT: Eric Bauman, President Stonewall Los Angeles Democratic Club 7985 Santa Monica Blvd. #325 West Hollywood, CA 90046 (818) 780-4590 StonwalDem@aol.com (Los Angeles) - Today Stonewall Democratic Club announced its endorsements for the March 26 Primary election. Stonewall's endorsements are based on a rigorous process of candidate review. The endorsement process includes completion of a wide-ranging 14 page questionnaire, interviews with a panel of Stonewall members, and presentations at a Stonewall meeting. Endorsements require a 60% vote of the membership. Stonewall President Eric Bauman said, "The 1996 elections are the most critical in years for lesbians and gays in light of the extreme right-wing takeover of the Congress and California Assembly. The future of programs and budgets for people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, the disadvantaged, the environment, and education are only part of what is at stake. The Republicans controlling our legislative bodies have made clear that reversing the civil rights advances of lesbians and gays is their number one priority. They not only seek to block recognition of same-gender marriages, but hope to dismantle all the civil rights protections we have fought for in recent years. Only through the re-election of Bill Clinton and by regaining Democratic control of the Congress and Assembly can we hope to maintain the laws and programs that protect us." Also, "Stonewall's endorsements reflect candidates who have committed themselves to the issues and causes essential to our community. These candidates are on our side on the issues of civil rights, AIDS funding, and health care. Lesbians and gays can vote with confidence for the candidates we've endorsed, knowing that they will fight to protect our community and to block the agenda of the Christian far-right," Bauman concluded.
