The program was a big success - SALGA was in the house! - and the installation by Debi-Ray Chaudhuri, _Sari Palace_, drew much praise, especially from celebrity-in-attendance, Sarita Chowdhury (no relation). Ms. Chowdhury, who starred in one of the videos screened that evening, was seen mingling at the maha-fantabulous reception which followed _Raat ki Rani_. (The glamour just knew no end! ) In fact, the groovin' mood was so down that SALGA has decided to go all out this year and throw a *Bhangra Blow-Out* to accompany _Jungli Boogie_. Khush friends from out of town are already making their travel plans for the Big Apple's 2-nights of film, frolic, bideo, booty and bhangra. _Jungli Boogie_ features a selection of the latest film and video (bideo) work by queer South Asian artists from around the world and around the corner, as part of *MIX: The 9th New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film/Video Festival*: Hindustan (Gita Reddy and David Dasharath Kalal, 1995, USA, video, color, sound, 3 min. ) *World Premiere. Here's a sort o' tantalizing ditty / The tune is catchy and the words are witty / Could be it's a country or a city.... her sweetness lingers (Shani Mootoo, 1994, Canada, video, color, sound, 12 min.) *NYC Premiere. Set in a garden tea party in a swirl of fragrance, flowers and beautiful women, this blend of elegant poetry and stunning imagery explores desire, love and the fatal possibilities that begin with a caress. Delilah (Tanya Mahboob Syed, 1995, UK, 16mm, b&w, sound, 12 min.) *NYC Premiere. "You moved like a warrior but I could not hold you. The outside is within us." A kinetic meditation on female expressions of power and desire. A chiaroscuro of tension and release. Darwish (Shafeeq Vellani, 1994, UK, film, color, sound, 12 min.) *NYC Premiere. "Taking nothing, leaving nothing, darwish, darwish." A lyrical journey into the world of a Sufi cab driver in England, as he moves aimlessly through the city receiving direction from whomever enters his cab. The musings about his various journeys are accompanied by the qa'awali of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Love Song for Persis K. (David Dasharath Kalal, 1995, USA, video, color, sound, 5 min.) *World Premiere. Persis, Persis, wherefore art thou Persis? Deny thy father and denude thy scalp Letter from Home (Shaffiq Essajee, 1995, USA, video, color, 12 min.) *World Premiere. "It's more than just apron strings. It's this sort of 10,000-mile long umbilical cord. And it's unbreakable." A cinematic translation of a theatrical event. Junky Punky Girls (nisha ganatra, 1995, USA, 16mm, b&w , sound, 12 min.) *World Premiere. Three friends, a couple of nose rings, a birthday and a filet o' fish. Caught between American pop culture and her traditional Indian heritage, Anita attempts to pierce her nose. _Jungli Boogie_ is curated by SALGA's own David Kalal and Gita Reddy, and the MIX Festival Committee is benefitted by the auspicious presence of none other than Vinay Isac Varughese. ------------------------------------ ****************************************************************************** To send a message to the entire list "queerplanet", email queerplanet@abacus.oxy.edu This list is run by the program MAJORDOMO@abacus.oxy.edu. *******************************************************************************
